Newspapers In Education

The mission of Newspaper in Education is to instill the joy of reading to children.

We do this by working with the school systems in the readership area of The Cumberland Times-News to provide newspapers to the schools, and offer assistance in using the newspaper to improve their reading skills and learn about current events, geography, math, social studies, etc.

A Kids' Page is published on Mondays during the delivery program, with information, activities and games for kids. We would love to include students' artwork, writing projects, etc. on this page.

We also promote a yearly Design an Ad project where children design ads for local businesses, which are published in a tabloid and distributed with the newspaper.

NIE participates in Target Date, which allows schools from across the USA to receive a copy of our newspaper on a specified day in order to compare it with other newspapers they select.

We offer tours of the Cumberland Times-News to school children (grade 3 and above), boy and girl scouts troops, and other educational and social organizations.
