He said he, his wife and other team mates are doing pretty well this season, but not great.
"We're in about sixth place out of 20 teams."
That doesn't bother him, he said, because they're staying active by bowling, which is more than he can say for his championship softball career.
"Back in 1935, we won the state softball championships [for] Ottumwa in Sioux City.
Because of rain, we played four games in one day. I probably pitched softball until 1965; I had several no hit games [but] I couldn't play softball now."
Yet a case full of trophies attests to the fact he's been hitting lanes in Davis County and Ottumwa for 69 years. He and his wife have their own bowling shoes, balls and carrying cases.
"We can still bowl. That's the advantage of bowling. In this day, if you bowl three lines, you walk an average of one mile going up and back," he said.
In fact, seniors who spend too much time sitting around would benefit from socializing and throwing a bowling ball once in a while, he said.
"It'd be real good for them, you bet," said Lewis. "[For] Senior League, we fill 20 lanes down there."
