According to the American Cancer Society, between 1997 and 2004, the percentage of adults who smoke decreased from 27.6% to 23.4% in men and from 22.1% to 18.5% in women. In the past two years these rates remained essentially unchanged at 23.9% in men and 18.0% in women in 2006. Currently, an estimated 80.1% of smokers smoke cigarettes daily. Regarding tobacco use among high school students, as of 2005 the highest percentage of smokers is found in South Dakota, and the lowest in Utah.
