Simple Steps To Save Energy
Having an energy-wise action plan can help consumers keep their costs down and also help the environment.
Consumers may not realize just how easy it is to take some simple steps to save energy costs, according to OG&E. There are a few simple but powerful steps consumers can take to use energy more efficiently. Also, OG&E can provide customized energy audits for customers.
Here are few simple tips:
• When the time is right, consider replacing your old heating and cooling system with a high-efficiency unit. Also, consider a geothermal system, which is about 200 percent more efficient and may qualify for low-interest financing.
• Check windows and doors for leaks. Then insulate, caulk and use weather-strips.
• Make sure attics and walls are properly insulated. Adding insulation to the attic is one of the most cost-efficient do-it-yourself saving measures.
• In the summer, set thermostats at the highest comfortable temperature, usually 75 degrees or higher. Each degree a thermostat is lowered can add three to four percent to cooling costs. In the winter, leave thermostats at a comfortable setting, which can be as low as 68 degrees.
• Turn off lights. Try motion sensors to help.
• Keep fixtures and bulbs clean.
• Use dimmers to control the amount of light you need in a room.
• Set your water heat at 120 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
• Replace showerheads with low-flow units, which can save a family of four 15,000 gallons of hot water per year.
• Don’t open the oven door to peek when cooking.
• Use glass or ceramic pans instead of metal in ovens.
• Turn off the oven or range a few minutes before the food is done.
• Wash clothes in cold water. Cold water washes just as well as warm water.
• Combine two small loads into one.
•When you replace your washer/dryer, consider front-loading units, which can reduce energy use by 50 percent or more.
• Properly planted trees give your home cooling shade in the summer and warming sunlight in the winter.
