ETC Glass Packages Qualify for Government Tax Credit

Want to save on your long-term household energy bills? Let the government help you.

According to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, homeowners can gain a tax credit of up to 30 percent of the cost of qualifying energy efficient upgrades to a maximum of $1,500 per household for 2009 and 2010. Purchasing energy-efficient replacement windows helps you start saving on energy bills the day windows are installed.

"Investing in energy-efficient replacements windows is always a good idea for a homeowner," says Mark Savan with Simonton Windows. "With the $1,500 tax credit incentive, the timing is absolutely ideal to purchase energy-efficient windows that will immediately reduce heating and cooling bills in the home.

"Replacement windows also add instant beauty and curb appeal to a house while increasing the overall value of the home. And, when selecting vinyl replacement windows, homeowners immediately gain an easier lifestyle because of the minimal long-term maintenance requirements for the windows."

To participate in the tax credit, make sure to follow these easy steps:

1. Purchase replacement windows with both a U Factor and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) that are equal to, or below, a 0.30 rating.

2. Make the purchase of the qualified windows during the taxable year for which the credit is being claimed.

3. Get a receipt for the cost of the windows separate from the installation cost. The tax credit is only allowed on the price of the qualified windows themselves, not on installation costs, onsite preparation, assembly or sales tax.

4. Act now. The tax credit is allowable only for qualified window units placed in service in 2009 and 2010.
