Easy Steps to Keep Seniors Safe
![]() |
According to Harvard University Medical School, home accidents are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. For that reason, it's imperative seniors take certain precautions to ensure their safety.
1. Exercise: Exercise helps to improve strength and balance. For seniors, exercise can help strengthen bones and decrease the risk of fractures. As bones get older, they tend to get weaker. A few light strength exercises combined with exercises to increase balance can make sure a fall is just a fall, and doesn't end up being something far worse.
2. Rearrange the home if necessary: While this should include the help of children or movers, rearranging a home can be a good way to reduce the risk of injury. Seniors who find themselves frequently walking up and down stairs to do things should consider moving rooms where they spend the bulk of their time onto the same floor. For example, seniors who spend much of their time in their entertainment rooms and home offices should consider combining the two rooms. This will lessen the risk of tripping on the staircase or growing fatigued due to frequent trips up and down the stairs.
3. Keep rooms well lit: Poorly lit areas around the home can be very dangerous to seniors. It's far easier to trip on rugs or other hazards in dim areas. Keep the supply of light bulbs fully stocked and in a convenient location. In addition, use lamps in areas where light fixtures are attached to the ceiling to avoid having to climb up on chairs or stools to change bulbs. Keep hand towels and sponges on hand as well to ensure any spills can be cleaned up before risking injury.
