Embrace Diversity in the Workplace. Different Cultures and Age Groups Enhance a Company
The term "melting pot" has been used for decades to describe the various people who meld together to make this country what it is today. Large cities are often melting pots of diverse individuals who bring their own unique experiences to better the community.Diversity in the workplace should be coveted and embraced as well. Diversity, meaning people of different races, gender, ethnic backgrounds, education, and even personality, is an important component in a well-rounded business. Different people bring different perspectives to a situation. Working together, these people can help make a company the best it can be. Diverse workplaces are better equipped to work efficiently and address changing markets.
Apart from different races and cultural interests, employees of different age groups are also vital. That's because one generation that has lived according to one set of norms than another may have operated according to a completely different line of thinking. When people of different ages are encouraged to come together, problem-solving and idea generation can be enhanced. There is also the ability to learn something from people who are younger or older than oneself.
Keep in mind that diversity can also help businesses when customers are looking to deal with someone who will understand their needs and be on their level. For example, a 30-something female who is considering doing business with a company may feel more comfortable working with someone of a similar age. She could perceive that the employee who is helping her will understand her generation and what she needs.
It is natural that, when it comes to diversity, not everyone will see eye to eye. Differences that make one person unique from another can certainly build camaraderie, but diversity can also breed miscommunication. One way to handle this is to focus on one's similarities -- even amongst diverse groups -- and how these similarities also add a special richness to a workplace.
When hiring for a company, it's important to keep diversity in mind but not hire specifically to tailor-make a company's staff. Otherwise the staff can seem contrived and it may compromise the natural exchange of ideas that come with heterogeneity in regard to employees.
